PASIG CITY- For years, skateboarding has become a sport and a recreational activity that enhances an individual’s lifestyle.
“Sidewalk Surfing,” as others call it, is a recreational activity that provides lots of benefits to people who engage in it. It levels up one’s cardiovascular endurance because it serves as a body workout; it improves flexibility, coordination and balance. It is also a great way to burn out calories. Skateboarding is also a stress-reliever. Most of all, it teaches important values to an individual: patience and determination.

Skateboarders can easily find a place to practice in Pasig City. One famous place for them is the RAVE Park (Rainforest Adventure). It has been getting a lot of interest from skateboarders because the adventure park has skateboard ramps where they can freely perform tricks.
Other most visited skateboarding places are Rosario Park, Kapitolyo Plaza, Rizal High School Oval, and Rio de Pasig.
Despite health and social advantages, skateboarding has its risks too. Skateboarders are exposed to danger, especially when doing extreme tricks.
“Kapag nagkakamali sa paggawa ng tricks, ‘di maiiwasan yung pagtama ng skateboard sa binti,” said Ace Buen, an 18-year-old skateboarder in Pasig. “May mga incident din na yung kasama ko, nabalian ng braso dahil nagkamali ng pagtungtong sa skateboard.”
The space under a flyover along E. Rodriguez Jr. Avenue near Barangay Ugong in Pasig City is considered as one of the most dangerous place for skateboarding. Worst accidents might happen since this area is along the highway where vehicles go in full speed. Notwithstanding the danger, skateboarders still go there to practice.
In 2011, the Asian Development Bank said nearly 1,900 people had been killed in more than 85,000 road accidents, including those from skateboarding, in the Philippines.
Sports is part of our lifestyle. It aims to transform us into better individuals. Still and all, safety should always go along with leisure and fun.
