Cruz was on his way to the University of Santo Tomas (UST) Hospital to visit a former chairman and his kagawad who were also shot last Aug. 26.
Harry Nagal, chairman of Barangay 470 where the ambush happened, believed that the suspects of Aug. 26 shootout were also the ones responsible for Cruz’s death.
A CCTV footage provided by Nagal showed the riding-in-tandem gunmen implicated in the shooting. However, there has been no lead on their identities.
According to Nagal, besides political mishaps, drug influences could also be the motive behind the ambush, noting that Barangay 210 is infamous for having plenty of drug syndicates.
He clarified that Cruz was not dead-on-the-spot, quoting a statement from the victim's child.
“According sa mga doctors ng UST lost of blood ang naging cause of death. 'Yan ang sinabi ng mga anak ng victim,” Nagal told the Colosseo.
The policemen who responded did not check Cruz’s vital signs and assumed that he was already dead because of his shot in the head, Nagal said.
Cruz’s remains are now at Funeraria Cruz in Rizal Avenue.
